Sitting all day and back tightness

Why Sitting All Day Makes Your Back Feel Tight

You feel fine at 9am. By 3pm, your lower back has that familiar tight, heavy ache — and you haven't done anything except sit at a desk. It's one of the most common complaints from people with seated jobs, and it's not really about sitting badly. It's about sitting still.

Your spine isn't built to stay in one position

Movement circulates blood and fluid through the discs and muscles supporting your spine. Sit still for hours and that circulation slows right down — the muscles supporting your lower back start to feel stiff and fatigued, even if your posture is technically fine.

Sitting changes the load on your spine

Compared to standing, sitting increases pressure on your lower back discs — especially if you're leaning toward a screen. Hours of that sustained pressure is a big part of why the area feels tight and heavy by the end of the day.

Your hip flexors tighten, and your back pays for it

Prolonged sitting shortens the muscles at the front of your hips. Tight hip flexors pull on your pelvis and lower spine over time — which often shows up as lower back tension, even though the actual cause is happening at the hips, not the back.

What actually helps

  • Move more than feels necessary — standing or walking for even a minute every 30–45 minutes keeps circulation going.
  • Stretch your hip flexors, not just your back — a simple standing lunge stretch makes a noticeable difference.
  • Support your lower back with a cushion if your chair doesn't hold its natural curve.
  • Apply gentle heat toward the end of the day, before tension carries into your evening.

The real goal

You don't need to sit perfectly. You need to avoid sitting still for too long. Small, regular movement breaks do more for your back than almost any adjustment to your chair or desk setup ever will.

For the evenings when movement alone isn't quite enough, our Back & Lumbar Support range is built to pick up where a stretch break leaves off.
